Work Hours:  Full time, temporary (12-month assignment)

Classification:  AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Youth Service California (YSCal) Cesar E. Chavez Service Club AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader will be responsible for engaging the AmeriCorps*VISTA members in indirect service through working with parents, teachers, administrators, local community based organizations and the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation (CECF). The AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader will support AmeriCorps*VISTA Members to develop and launch dynamic Afterschool Service Clubs honoring the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez. This exciting youth leadership program helps middle school students become successfully engaged in their community.  The AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader will be working in the Youth Service California (YSCal) office in Oakland, CA with travel throughout the State of California.

YSCal’s Cesar E. Chavez Initiative is a collaborative effort with the CECF and CaliforniaVolunteers. These Service Clubs are being established in 80 middle schools across California. Forty AmeriCorps*VISTA members will each work with two local Clubs.  The Cesar E. Chavez Service Club AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader will support the AmeriCorps*VISTA Members in recruiting, developing and coordinating the Cesar E. Chavez Service Clubs with the Program Manager, Cesar E. Chavez Service Clubs. The goal of the AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader will be to maintain, expand, and make sustainable ongoing youth leadership though service opportunities. The AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader will be mainly responsible for acting as the liaison to the AmeriCorps*VISTA state office and for the collection and submission of VISTA Member monthly reports.

The AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader will be supported by the Program Manager, Cesar E. Chavez Service Clubs. The VISTA Leader will receive extensive, on-going training and support in volunteer management, youth development, youth service, service-learning and Cesar E. Chavez curriculum.  Also, the VISTA Leader will have the unique opportunity to meet and connect with those who have worked with Cesar E. Chavez!

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist the Program Manager, Cesar E. Chavez Service Clubs in recruitment, placement and training of 40 AmeriCorps*VISTA Members throughout the State of California
  • Assist the Director and the Program Manager, Cesar E. Chavez Service Clubs in supervision of AmeriCorps*VISTA members
  • Mentor AmeriCorps*VISTA members in developing service projects for Cesar E. Chavez Day, National Days of Service and educating the community about their chosen community issue. 
  • Assist with preparation and support for on-going AmeriCorps*VISTA member orientations and trainings
  • Collect monthly AmeriCorps*VISTA member reports and submit to AmeriCorps*VISTA state office
  • Serve as the liaison to the AmeriCorps*VISTA state office and facilitate communication and passing of information to AmeriCorps*VISTA Members on an on-going basis
  • Facilitate monthly AmeriCorps*VISTA member conference calls
  • Coordinate the evaluation of each Service Club
  • Assist with other YSCal events as needed
 

REQUIRED

  • Some college
  • Supervision experience
  • Computer literacy (PC and/or Mac), especially database and web based applications
  • Vehicle, valid drivers license and insurance or public transportation to get to and from school site
  • Completed term of service as AmeriCorps*VISTA, AmeriCorps, or Peace Corps volunteer

PREFERRED

  • Excellent communication skills including public speaking and report writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience in youth development in an afterschool environment
  • Experience with fundraising and grant writing, or a willingness to learn
  • Experience in event planning and volunteer management (will train)
  • Spanish language skills a plus
