Grant Requirements

Grantees that are selected to establish Cesar E. Chavez Afterschool Service Clubs must meet the following requirements:

1. Grantees must establish four year-round Service Clubs in middle schools within their jurisdiction. The following exceptions to this number can be made for very large and small districts or county offices of education:
  • Large districts or county offices of education with more than 50,000 students may apply to establish Service Clubs in a maximum of eight qualifying middle schools if they can demonstrate the capacity to implement them.
  • Small districts with less than 2,500 students or only one or two qualifying middle schools may apply to establish Service Clubs in one or two qualifying middle schools or they may connect with other small districts and apply through their county office of education. Charter Schools are encouraged to partner with other schools and must apply through their district or county office of education.  Priority for funding will be given to applicants with a minimum of four qualifying middle schools.
2. Service Clubs can only be established in middle schools that:
  • Receive funds from the federal Title I program,
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to establishing a Service Club,
  • Have a credentialed teacher who oversees its afterschool programming, and
  • Provide adequate support, space, access and awareness to ensure program success.
3. Expectations of school districts and county offices of education:  School districts and county offices of education are expected to:
  • Work closely with the middle schools to design, implement and monitor the Service Clubs,
  • Provide supervision, support and space for the AmeriCorps*VISTA members who are assigned to them,
  • Make available a credentialed teacher who will be trained by the Corporation for National and Community Service and Youth Service California to supervise the program and AmeriCorps*VISTA members, and
  • Help coordinate opportunities for all teachers within the district or county office of education boundaries to participate in a training on integrating lessons and service related to Cesar E. Chavez into the regular school day (this training will be made available through the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation in conjunction with Youth Service California).
