Youth Service California
Job Description Backgrounds

Background I: Youth Service California (YSCal)
Youth Service California is a statewide non-profit organization committed to making service a meaningful part of every young person’s life in California. When young people participate in service to others, they tend to develop more positive attitudes toward themselves and their communities, heightened awareness of their responsibilities as citizens and human persons, and useful skills that help them make better transitions to adulthood.

Youth Service California has earned a statewide and national reputation for the excellence of its professional development training, published materials, event planning, and collaborative leadership. Currently, Youth Service California:

  • Manages the service-learning training and technical assistance for the California Department of Education’s CalServe program.
  • Manages the ten-state Pacific Region of the National Service-Learning Exchange, in collaboration with the National Youth Leadership Council.
  • Is pioneering the use of service-learning in afterschool programs; recently published Service-Learning in Afterschool Programs: Resources for Afterschool Educators, the first publication of its kind in the country.
  • Manages an innovative Youth Leadership through Service program that helps high school students become leaders by supporting the development of service-learning across California.
  • Collaborates with the Shinnyo-en Foundation in an eight-year partnership supporting intergenerational exploration of the spiritual, religious, and cultural roots of service.
  • Recently selected to manage the Cesar E. Chavez Service Programs for the California Service Corps on behalf of the State of California.

Background II: Cesar E. Chavez Service Programs
The Cesar E. Chavez Day of Service and Learning program (CCD) is a state-funded effort to engage students through their schools, schools districts and community-based organizations in community service and learning that honors the life, work and values of Cesar E.
