Current board members

Michael Boyer is Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer, New Image Technologies. He was the CEO and Senior Consultant of the Pismo Group, Inc. where he drove customer relationships. Michael studied business and communications at the University of Oregon, and is currently active in many industry, community service and non-profit organizations including a board position with the Rotary Club of Pismo Beach, a board position and member with the Grover Beach Chamber of Commerce, Endowment Committee with the Clark Center Foundation, Technology Advocacy Committee and member of the San Luis Obispo Chamber, PMI, the Web Analytics Association, the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce and of Softec.

Valerie Chan (Treasurer) is a student at the University of California, Berkeley. She has served as an Alternative Break Leader and is currently the Development Coordinator of the Alternative Breaks program at the Cal Corps Public Service Center on campus. Throughout the year 2007, as the Community Partnerships Chair, she helped launch The Magnolia Project- a student group and initiative to support victims of Hurricane Katrina through education, advocacy, and service. Valerie enjoys fencing competitively for UC Berkeley’s club team, reading, and laughing.

Marge Crichton,
teacher, counselor and administrator for Eureka City Schools, is now retired and serves as a consultant in the service arena. Marge created the Special Projects Program for Eureka City Schools in which she oversaw programs in service learning, mentoring, AmeriCorps, VISTA, Community Challenge Pregnancy Prevention, Cesar Chavez Healthy Community, School to Career and the Community Challenge Program. She was part of the development of the Volunteer Center of the Redwoods, local AmeriCorps programs and the Humboldt County Teen Court. She has served on the Humboldt State University Service Learning Advisory Committee and has been a CalServe Coach, lead of Region One Service Learning Network for nine years and one of five State of California Evaluator Liaisons for the CalServe/University of California Berkeley for 2003-2006. She is currently the evaluator for Eureka City School’s Project Serve.

Rue Mapp is a senior at UC Berkeley. Her major is History of Art, with a minor in City and Regional Planning, and she expects to graduate in June 2009. Since arriving at Cal, Rue has worked with various initiatives to promote greater access and support for under-represented minorities. She currently works with the non-profit Stiles Hall as a coordinator for Experience Berkeley, a program designed to recruit and mentor Black, Latino, and Native community college transfer students to apply to Cal. Beyond Cal, she is interested in public relations work that bridges gaps and builds relationships between the public and private sectors to promote the arts and other quality-of-life initiatives. On the lighter side, Rue enjoys the domestic arts; she won a ribbon for her cornbread recipe in the 2007 Alameda County Fair. She is also an avid bicyclist and takes pleasure in the outdoors. The joy of her life is being a mom to Seth (10), Delaney (5), and Billy (4).

Douglas Neff (Chair) is a teacher, development coach, and writer with a lifelong passion for youth, education, and culture change. He earned his M.A. in Consciousness Studies from JFK University and his B.A. in Music and Religious Studies from Ithaca College. He has been certified in transformational leadership training and is an Educator for the Eden Alternative, a non-profit committed to creating lasting change in the nursing home industry. He is also an adjunct professor at JFK University, where he teaches a course on culture change in Elder care. Most recently, he founded Toucan Learning Systems, an educational consultancy firm that specializes in breakthrough training and leadership development. He is currently a content developer at Duarte Design, Inc., a graphic design firm specializing in visual representations.

Monica Santos (Secretary)
is currently the Director of Coaching Corps at Team-Up for Youth in Oakland, CA. She helped to create their volunteer program, which recruits, trains, and places college students as youth sports coaches in Bay Area community-based organizations. She is a former AmeriCorps member, who ran an after-school tutoring program through the Cal Corps Public Service Center at UC Berkeley. She also directed a school-based mentoring program. She also volunteers as a girls running coach as an elementary school in San Francisco. Monica received her B.A. from UC Berkeley and masters from the Graduate School of Education, University of San Francisco in Organization and Leadership.

Carolyn Sweeney (Vice Chair) is an experienced Staffing Professional with expertise in business development, sales, hiring, and management. She is the Division Director of Accountemps in Oakland and has been placing professionals in job opportunities and developing client relationships in the greater Oakland area for almost seven years. Carolyn has managed and motivated teams for the past four years and loves being a part of dynamic teams that make things happen. She is a strong believer in service as a vehicle to transform oneself, the community and the world. She looks forward to joining the board of California Youth Service and contributing her talents to make a positive impact on the world.
